Q: What are common problems with a bmw x5 that is over 100k miles?
I am thinking of swapping my 05 golf gti with 48k miles with an 05 bmw x5 with 100k miles. You hear of most cars having problems after 100k
– Is it wise to swap?!
– What problems can occur over 100k with an x5
– What advice would you give to maintain it and make it go for another 100k miles maybe?!

Q: How is the reliability on the X5 BMW?
I am thinking about buying a used 2006 BMW X5 that has 52000 miles. This would be my first BMW… I would appreciate any type of feedback/experience especially related to the X5 model.

A: The x5 is a great car, but I have an x3 with about 55000 miles and the maintenance is what can be so expensive and oil change can be 150 bucks. Great car maintenance cost is just something to keep in mind.

Q: how to replace the alternator on a BMW X5?
I have a 2003 BMW X5 and the alternator seems to be the problem. I already changed the battery twice (thinking it was a battery problem), but yesterday, the battery started draining again. Others had told me that it could be the alternator. I’ve priced the alternators and I would rather do the work myself, but I don’t know how difficult this task might be. Any thoughts?

A: why don’t you take it to your bmw service center so they can hook it up to the computer and check where the problem is, and it up to you if you want them to fix the problem or take it somewhere else, atleast you will check out all options before doing anything.

Q: Why is my BMW X5 central lock system not functioning?
(year 2003) BMW X5, apparently the central lock system does not work.

Also, the interior lights does not turn on when the door is opened.

Anyone know why this happen and how to fix it?

A: Could be a bunch of reasons. Check the fuses, is the key initialized? Is the key charged, Is there a fault code for low power or high power. X5’s also have ignition switch issues that can cause similar problems.

Q: How long will my BMW x5 run for? Is it a good first car?
My mom has an 03′ BMW x5 with 140k miles on it. Im 16 and shes buying a new car and handing this one down to me. Just wondering how long they usually last. We are the original owners of the car and it has been treated gently. Is this a good first car to start out with? Thanks!

A: 140k is absolutely nothing. As long it was well maintained it will run until you buy your own car and then some.

Q: IS it hard to remove xenon headlights from BMW x5 and put aftermarket ones?
I have BMW x5 3.0i 2002 with xenon headlights,but i got other one with seperate ballast and new headlights. Any ideas how to install it? Please details.

A: My advice: don’t.

If you already have an x5 with original factory fit Xenon headlights, that’s the way to leave it. Xenon headlights are a lot more fiddly to install than the old fashioned kind. They can be dangerous to handle, and contain high voltage capacitors that could shock you.

At the end of the day, the odds of you being able to switch out the lights, and do a better job than the factory is pretty slim. Especially as you apparently don’t even know where to start.

When you eventually trade your car, its value will be determined by the mileage, vehicle history, condition, and whether or not you have been messing with it. No one wants to buy a car that some enthusiastic amateur has been playing with. People are looking for a good clean vehicle in as close to original condition as possible.

Q: How to transfer ipod music into bmw x5?
so i can plug it in and play it through aux in the bmw x5 2009 but i cannot transfer them into the car as it says on the manual in which the car can store 16,000 songs so i dont need to plug it in everytime, anyone know how to do this? transfer songs from ipod into bmw x5 2009 so i do not have to plug ipod in everytime the play the songs.

A: My M3 has a separate USB connection in the glove compartment other than the one in the console used for playing only. This is the one you need to use to transfer music. But you can’t do it from the iPod. You will have to store the songs on a separate USB device, like a flash drive, and plug that in. Once you find it in the iDrive, the system will then transfer all the files into a folder on the hard drive in the car. They can be WMA, MP3, or AAC. However, it will not play back protected files, like M4P you buy off iTunes, only store them. But it will play back M4A files. You can also copy entire CD/DVDs even if it is full of songs in the above formats.

Q: Can a Craftsman garage opener be compatible with a BMW X5 Universal Remote System?
I tried 2 options from the manual to get the Universal Remote System on my BMW X5 to work with my Craftsman garage opener unit but it’s not working. Am I too far from the unit? What should be distance from the car to the unit?

A: BMW homelink system should work with most garage openers. If the BMW instructions don’t work, bring it to the dealer.

I believe you need to hold the door opener right next to the BMW homelink unit when programming.

Q: Can I add a nav system later in a used 2003 BMW X5?
I am about to purchase a 2003 BMW X5, 3.0i Sport edition vehicle with no navigation system… Will it be possible for BMW to modify the dash board and install a nav system for me? And if so, will it cost a lot to do so?

A: I’ve heard that the iDrive system sucks. Better to go with a Garmin.

Q: What do ABS and Brake and DSC lights on mean on BMW X5?
I have a 2001 BMW X5 and on the dashboard the ABS, Brake, and DSC lights are always on. They will not turn off. What does this mean? Is there a problem with my car? If there is a problem how can I fix it?

A: Go to the dealer and get it checked out. these lights come on when you are driving aggressively. The same thing has happened to a friend of mine Especially for the DSC ( Dynamic Stability Control ) this controls the handling of your car like a traction control.

Q: Please can any one expalin how I can locate the engine number of a BMW X5 3.0 TURBO DIESEL ENGINE?
In some countries to register a car they need the Chasiss N. (frame) , and the Engine N. I need to know where to look to find the number on the turbo diesel engine of the BMW X5 3.0?

A: The number of all engines is always located and engraved on the engine block. Either it’s on the left side or the right side of the engine assuming that you are facing the fan belts.

Q: what is the best aftermarket in dash navigation for BMW x5?
I have non navigation,non DSP,non Bluetooth BMW x5 3.0i 2002. I want to get in dash navigation for it,which plays MP3 files and still supports steering wheel controls and has bluetooth connectivity and ofcourse GPS itself :-) Any suggestions? (I want it look as close as possible to stock,but have much more options,and to have touchscreen and have very bright colorful screen).

A: Ok what can I tell you. I have BMW x5 4.4 2002 so I know what I am talking about. First broblem you are going to have is doble din dash kit some person is selling it for $470 each on ebay. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can find doble dash kit cheaper I would say between $150-$250 but still it is going to look bad. I changed my speakers through out my car put couple of subwoofers and install two head rest dvds. trust me is it gooooooood. Good Luck.

A: Yes. It uses Premium gas, synthetic oils, and parts and maintenance cost about 50 percent more than Ford parts.
